There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den betting is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent spot, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; however, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of most borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling den, features 150 slot machine games and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel complex that contains numerous amenities aside from the casino, which has ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 tables.
